The ideal "Leadership Personality" - does it exist?

What the journals say...

June 2005 -- Current research is becoming more coherent about the existence (or otherwise) of an ideal Leadership Personality.  It is generally agreed that no one personality type can be identified with good leadership but there is increasing agreement that certain characteristics can be considered "minimum requirements" if an individual is both to emerge as a leader and then to manage the leadership relationship effectively.

The model which has been heavily researched in regard to Leadership Personality is the well-known five factor model which has been around since the early 1960's.  Through the recent consideration of hundreds of studies using this model, American researchers have found that Extraversion and Conscientiousness were most often related to Leader Emergence whilst both Extraversion and Openness (often called Openness to Experience) were equally related to Leadership Effectiveness.

The trait of Neuroticism which covers the same ground as dimensions such as Emotional Stability, Worrying, Anxiety etc. was negatively related to both emergence and effectiveness whilst Agreeableness was related to Leadership effectiveness but not emergence.  Basically, this means you don't need to be agreeable to become a leader but it helps if you wish to be effective in that role.

Naturally, all of this has implications for how we both recruit and develop leaders.  Only well developed and well understood personality measures can truly help us make the right decisions and TPS are working to bring together a coherent set of tools which will make our clients, job that much easier in this regard.
